Layout
The layout is probably the most important design aspect when creating a website. The layout needs to take into multiple points. It needs to be easily readable for the whole website, it needs to ensure that people do not have to search about looking for the information that they need. The navigation is another very important aspect so when looking at the layout, the navigation needs to be clearly labelled so that the users of the site can switch between different pages easily.
My layout designs were simple and easily navigated as I kept the button at the top as is most commonly found on websites. Using a header, footer and sidebar that is in exactly the same place on each page keeps consistency throughout the website making it easier to navigate.
Graphics
Any images, either created or photographs are very important as it gives personality to your website as well as drawing in the attention of users and keep them using your website. Created graphics such as headers and backgrounds need to be in theme with your website as the majority of people using it will be interested in whatever your website has to offer.
The graphics that I have on my website were all taken and created by me. The main header is simple and easy to read but gives personality to the website as well as keeping to the theme of nature. It manipulates the text to show the main things about the glasshouse such as the fish pond and broken wheel. The photos were all taken on location of various aspects and the best images were then selected and put on the website. The photos were taken to try and persuade people to come to the glasshouse.
Colour Scheme
The colour scheme that I chose was to reflect the nature of the Glasshouse. I used green in the heading and the background to give that feeling. The gradient background was subtle but supposed to make the black text stand out and therefore make it easier to read. The header was green to keep in theme with the nature feel of the website and I kept it a fairly dark green in order to keep it readable against the white background.
Browser Compatibility
Browser compatibility is very important as you will be unaware as to which browser people viewing your website are using. The most commonly used are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome so your website must at least work on these. As I used wordpress for my website, wordpress is already compatible with all browsers that are available making it easy to create my website without having to worry too much about compatibility. The website has been tested on Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome just in case, everything is working as expected.
Font
Font is important when designing a website as you want something that is easy to read but also brings personality to your website. As I was creating an information based website, the best font would be something that we easy to read as the primary characteristic when looking for a font.

Storyboard / Site Map
Below are the storyboards for each of the web pages on my website. The basic outline is given with main content however the final product may be slightly different based on sizes of images etc.

The site map will be very simple and not hard to navigate, each of the pages will not have further pages, each of the pages will be accessable through the buttons on every page.

L02 - Website Research
This website focuses a lot on information and is set out in a clear and easy to read format. The colour scheme feels very professional and also allows the information to be easily read by using very light colours in the background and black for the text. This website doesn't really stand out but it fits the purpose of being used by all age ranges regardless of technical skills.
Very similar to the above website, this isn't a website that stands out but is very easy to use. The colour scheme is again very simplistic and basic use of black and white. This works well as you can clearly see where all the information you need is located and does not follow complex navigation allowing it to be used by anyone.
This website has more colour involved in it. It still follows the very traditional black and white styles of most museums which allows it to be easily navigated (and looks very professional) but uses the colour blue for borders and background colours on it's banners and titles which allows it to step away from the traditional and makes it stand out more. The buttons are also quite large which allows them to be easily seen or found which allows easier and better navigation through the website.
Very different from the traditional museums style pages. This website is very vibrant and colourful which is expected of a very artistic museum. Everything is laid out under headings for easy navigation but I find that the text is too small and does not really stand out against the background colourful which could make it difficult for older people.
Very different from previous museum websites, this is very colourful and does not follow the traditional black and white. Despite this it is very easy to navigate and easy to see the links to each of the pages. The banner makes the website stands out as the building is pink which means the colours of the website needs to make that stand out but not too much and it achieves this very well.
The British Museum website is very simply laid out and extremely easy to navigate. Follows a simple 3 column structure but with enough space in between each of the columns so that it does not look too cramped up. The images are large and easy to see and the background colour contrasts well with the text colour making it easy to read.
Very small page that does not fully utilise the whole screen so wastes a lot of space. The colours do not really match or compliment each other that well but it is very easy to navigate even though all the text is very small. The website was not designed for all screen resolutions so does not rescale.
A good contrast of red text on a white background means it is easy to read whilst still maintaining the colour scheme of the banners and buttons. Very simple website with a few pictures but gets the information across clearly and navigation is simple.
Very eye catching design with a good background that compliments well with the colours. There is no real information on the main splash page so you need to click one of the pictures or buttons to get to the page you need. There are a lot of links on the main page so navigate is slower as you find the information you need.
Very artistic and simple website, the main image changes through a few different ones. The footer and side margin are simple colours that compliment well with easy laid out navigation links. The white text contrasts well against the colours making it easy to read.
Very easy to navigate with large buttons or images to click. The main information can be found on the main page so you don't need to click through to find it out. The colour scheme is simple with a white background to let the black text contrast well against it with pink put in key headers or links to make them stand out well.
Very nice black and white layout. The colours are simple so contrast well making the website easy to read as well as keeping with the historic feel. The yellow for any links are easy to see as the contrast very well against the black and white. The navigation is easy with all the main links at the top of the page.
